The Originator of this recipe, Mary L. Jackson Millsaps was born in 1921 in Gainesville, GA to Berry and Irene Jackson.  At the age of 10, her mother died suddenly.  After this tragedy, while growing up, she  loved to cook for her sisters and brothers and enjoyed trying new things.  At age 16, she met her husband of 52 years, Joe Millsaps.  Together they had 8 children.

While being a stay at home mom and moving to Chattanooga, TN, She continued cooking and trying out new recipes, some for fun and others to just stretch the food so everyone would be fed.  After all of the children were in school, she decided she wanted to get a job.  She began working up on top of Lookout Mountain as a maid and caretaker.

While working there, she had access to top of the line mixers, ovens, spices and ingredients.  In an attempt to cook a dessert for her employer, she tried a new mixture for her sweet potato pie.  She'd always had strings in that particular pie and it always resembled pumpkin pie.  She began thinking of how to remove all of the strings from the pie.  Then, she began thinking of different spices she could include to make her pie taste rich and smooth but savory.  Once the mixture was partially cooked and complete, she began to make her pie crust.  Once the crust was molded to the pan, she poured the mixture in and began to bake it for about 1 hour.   The aroma in the house was so mesmerizing until the other staff along with the owner was wondering what she was cooking.  Everyone wanted to taste this sweet potato pie.  Once it was done, she presented it to her boss, warm and sliced.  It was truly the best sweet potato pie she has tasted.  When the rest of the staff tasted it, they said, "There is no other like it."

She cooked this pie all during the year, every year until she passed away in April 17th 1993.  Her middle daughter Brenda asked her a few years before she passed away to write down her recipes so the children would have them.  That recipe was one that she did get the chance to write. Brenda began to cook it to see if the same taste to be achieved.  AND IT WAS!  Only Mary's children and a couple of grandchildren have this recipe but only one has achieved the savory, sweet taste of her mother's homemade sweet potato pie.

Miss Brenda now invites the whole United States to taste this recipe like none other.  It is truly a taste of heaven!
